On Friday I am having my first knee replacement.

I am not scared but more worried how my family is going to cope whilst I am in hospital and out of action for a while afterwards. I have spent weeks preparing my family for this. The freezer is filled, the calendar has everything they need to know itemised. My 14 year old Daughter and Husband have been mentally prepared for the day of my operation and afterwards. Maybe I am a control freakBigGrin

I am so looking forward to losing the agonising toothache pain in the knee. I know it will take me a while afterwards to get mobile but it will so be worth it. I am having my second knee done in the summer school holidays and then I will be bionic. I so want to be able to take my Daughter shopping and on days out without having a dread in my stomach waiting for the pain to kick in after the first 20 minutes but putting on a brave face.

It is going to be a long week until Friday but I have my pre-op assessment tomorrow and then blood tests and various appointments for my Daughter through the week.

I have had so many horror stories from various people who have kindly regaled me with what happened to them and how awful things had been. Luckily I have been sensible enough to block them out and keep thinking positive.

Will keep you posted how I get on.

Jackie
xx

An exciting time for you Jackie!
Don't listen to the ones that don't go quite right-there are many more that have meant a complete new pain freelife for the owners!
You sound really positive and you sound to have prepared the troops well! Good Luck!

Good luck Jackie. I'm sure life will be so much better for you. My mother-in law had a new knee about 10 years ago (at 76) and it made such a difference to her life. She already had 2 artificial hips so I sent flowers addressed to 'the bionic Grand-ma'!! With the amazing advances in surgery I'm sure yours go smoothly.

Good luck Jackie - I hope the op is successful and you have a straightforward recovery. Try not to worry about the family coping - they will manage.

Take care,

Hi Jackie

YOU WILL BE FINE - I was and I'm grossly overweight and have high BP! I was up and about the day after the op and apart from the obvious discomfort of the cut tissue and muscles, the horrid bone on bone stuff had gone and it was amazing!! To be able to stand without wincing was stunning! I heartily recommend this op!!

Take care - loads of love

Hi Jackie,

Very best wishes and good luck for Friday. My dad has his done years ago and has never looked back. Arm yourself with an exercise bike for when you are able, the surgeon said my dad had the best bend he had ever seen in a new knee due to using the bike. Hope all goes well for you.

Hi Jackie

Will be thinking of you on Friday. Hope things go well and you have a speedy recovery! I will be interested to read your progress ... how about a blog to keep us updated?

I am currently awaiting a referral back to orthopaedics for further knee treatment (after last summer's debacle I'm none too happy ... but heyho!). The consultant does not feel that replacement is the way forward for me at the moment despite significant damage to the joints and torn meniscii. He prefers to do revisions to improve joint function and mobility. That said I had a dreadful 12 months following a wrist replacement so perhaps my head (and my body LOL ) isn't in the right place for anything too drastic!!

Good luck Jackie ThumpUp
